The Do's & Don'ts for Frozen Shoulder

frozen shoulder

A frozen shoulder is not a fun thing to experience. It can be painful and the inability to move normally, such as reaching an itch on your back, or reaching your arm above your head, become problematic from the stiffness in the shoulder. It is sort of a paradox as the less you move, the more pain and stiffness occur.

As inflammation progresses, scars appear, which can cause adhesions between the tendons, bones, and ligaments. This reduces the rotational space, which makes it harder for the arm to move. However, exercise is essential to maintain mobility.

Let’s look at some of the do’s and don’ts to understand better how to manage a frozen shoulder.

  • Avoid activities involving heavy lifting or sudden movements, as they irritate the shoulder. Don’t stop moving entirely to avoid pain.

  • Movement is essential

  • It is beneficial to work with a physiotherapist to understand the condition and what exercises will assist in moving the shoulder and getting some pain relief.

In the following video, Physiotherapist Allen Hewik shares a few more tips, such as sleeping on a sore shoulder and range of motion.

Can acupuncture help a frozen shoulder?

In a 2021 clinical study, researchers determined that acupuncture alleviates pain and restores the range of motion to the shoulder for patients with frozen shoulders, with no adverse effects.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the body at specific points to improve some aspect of one’s health. The insertion of needles into specific anatomical points helps stimulate the release of endorphins which are the body’s natural pain-relieving neurohormones.

In the following video, Allen talks about how Acupuncture can reduce and release muscle spasms from frozen shoulder.

Acupuncture targets points in the body where nerves, muscles and connective tissues can be stimulated to help aid in healing or aid in strengthening weaknesses in the muscle tissues to reduce muscle imbalances. The stimulation within the body helps create proper blood flow and triggers the body's natural painkiller.

Our Physiotherapists and Chiropractors integrate acupuncture with their other techniques to treat conditions like joint stiffness, weakness of any kind, postural dysfunction, and muscle imbalances.
